Cheeseburger, low-fat healthy version for heart health, diabetes care, cholesterol management and weight loss
Heart Health
Health Care Notes
Some of us really love their burgers. When it comes to burgers, you can choose between the good news and the bad news. The bad news: traditional burgers are highly atherogenic ( cause plaque in the arteries ) and are not suitable nutrition for cardiac patients or diabetics, on account of their saturated fat content. The very good news: since soy contains the same protein or amino acids ( the building blocks for protein) as beef, you can make a burger, just as delicious, and have one with plaque fighting properties. You can also make your own hamburger veggie patties using beans of your choice. Combining beans (legunes) and unrefined wholegrain cereals will provide all the amino acids necessary for protein synthesis. Just remember to use fat free dressings or fat free BBQ sauce...and whole grain buns!
If, like a lot of people, your main source of vegetables was an order of French fries, it may be time to consider some other sources. Making a daily habit of replacing the fries with real veggies may contribute a lot in achieving a better cholesterol profile and in helping control your blood pressure. A salad or a vegetable-rich soup as a side dish may also help diabetic patients in controlling blood sugar, while fries may only worsen the problem. When salad happens to be the carrying vehicle for the veggies, make sure to use fat-free vinaigrette (watch the sugar content). When soup is the vegetables carrier, beware of the sodium content of some products on the market.
Stick to wholegrain hamburger buns. Ask your Doctor or Nutritionist about the total amount of carbohydrate you should eat daily and determine with him/her the quantity you should have at each meal and snack. It is preferable you do not try to do this by yourself. Once you have the information, your meal planning will become a lot easier.
Note: Veggie burger patties, especially the ones you make yourself from beans contain more fiber than meat patties.
The heart care recipe was used as a template for analysis. Balance with accompanying dishes so as not to exceed your set caloric intake. Use an oil sprayer similar to the one shown in the "directions", in order to keep the caloric intake down. Why not replace the usual cola with hM tea mix ( 1 bag black Earl Grey + 1 bag green tea ) or unsweetened ice-tea ? This would keep the calorie count lower.
Cooking Directions
Place soy burger patty flat on a plate and spray a fine mist of oil on top.
Sprinkle the steak spices on it. Turn over and repeat.
Put a thin layer of the chopped onions and/or chopped green or red pepper, the diameter of the patty, at the bottom of a microwave or ovenproof plate. Put patty on top of this layer. Cover the patty with the same ingredients. Cook patty in the microwave or toaster oven. Frying with butter or oil in a pan is NOT the recommended cooking method for cardiac patients.
Insert the cooked patty and onions and peppers in the bun. Cover with fat-free BBQ Sauce or prepared mustard and a slice of fat-free cheese. Reheat slightly and serve.
Cooking Variations
As you develop skills in making this dish and your burgers become better and better still, feel free to experiment with other components you deem to be healthy. Note that using meat-based patties will ruin the virtues of this burger on account of the very high saturated fat content. To compare, the total number of calories derived from fat goes from 15% for the veggie version to as high as over 60% for the meat-based burger. A similar type of comparison also reveals that the values for protein content are very close.

You may want to serve this dish with a blend of healthy juices such as cranberry and blueberry (unsweetened), a garden vegetable soup, a summer fruit salad and a blend of artery taming teas.

WARNING !
The software uses data and values similar to those of the SR20 Release from the United States Department of Agriculture data bank as a base for nutritional data analysis. Whereas it is one of the largest scientific nutritional databases we know of, not all of the ingredients in the world are included. If you use a recipe software program to create, edit and / or analyse your own personal healthy recipes, on rare occasions, some exotic. unusual or improbable ingredients will cause a "no available data alert" ! Discuss with your MD or RD regarding which nutritional values you should be aiming for.
