A Link between Heart Disease and Diabetes ?

It is widely recognized today that, in order to be succesful, many people should not only treat the one condition they have been diagnosed with, but should also pay close attention to its habitual accompanying devils. Nearly 60% of diabetics die of some kind of arterial problem, heart attack, stroke or other. On the other hand, many heart patients, besides being stricken with high blood pressure (hypertension) or high levels of "the bad" LDL-cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) are found to exhibit signs of either diabetes, IFG (impaired fasting glucose) or insulin resistance. This is why you will find a "Make the Link" page when you visit the American Diabetes Association's website. A similar section or reference is also found on the site of the American Heart Association. While the evidence of a link is primarily based on epidemiological studies, this evidence can be classified as strong or hard evidence. Both Associations encourage appropriate management of glycaemia (sugar level in the blood), blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This could hardly be otherwise, since the lining of the arteries ( the epithelium ) is thin and fragile. It is bound to be seriously affected or damaged by unhealthy levels of either blood sugar, cholesterol or blood pressure. These factors cause Coronary Artery Disease or ( CAD / CHD ) or Peripheral Artery Disease ( PAD ). PAD refers to the hardening of the arteries in places other than the heart, such as those supplying the calf muscles or the feet. The above facts explain partly why most of the amputations of the lower limbs involve diabetics whose blood circulation to the lower limbs has become so poor that, in severe cases, conditions like gangrene or ulcers develop. People with either diabetes or artery disease are advised by both Associations to discuss with their Doctor and their professional nutritionist (preferably a registered dietitian) in order to develop a management plan that adresses at the same time : * Proper control of glycaemia * Proper control of cholesterol level * Proper control of blood pressure CAUTION : When it comes to blood pressure, you will notice that the Chef Goodwizzard TM recipes always use "No-Salt TM" instead of regular salt. While it very helpful to many people in the management of blood pressure, you should always discuss its use with your doctor before using potassium chloride as a salt substitute. There are some people who should not use it. For more on this, one can refer to the DASH diet ( Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension ). One can read about it on the AHA or the ADA website. You can also refer to the Mayo Clinic website. In the e-Library you will find a link that refers to an updated and lengthy version. It is an official "AHA Scientific Statement".
